Everything keeps getting further away economically. It’s like those dolly zoom shots in cinema where the camera keeps the subect in the same spot but the background rapidly recedes. I keep trying to move forward, but it feels like we’re not getting anywhere.

    Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!

    Through the Looking Glass was published during the original Gilded Age, and we are currently living in another.
