I think it’s precisely because liberalism has neither the toolset nor any actions in its scope to counter fascism that they relish the idea of disappearing regular folk leftists. If they make those leftists out to be “tankies,” then suppression and oppression of them can be held up as “protecting” liberal democracy and they can feel like they’re accomplishing something while the fascist meat grinder continues unabated.
