i think you're kind of thinking about it with monday's paper. they were systematically hired by the west more than ripped apart. nato, nasa, cia, nazis were integrated into western society. and when hitler actually started invading other countries, a lot of european nations didn't give a fuck about it. stalin tried to talk with britain and france before things escalated even further but they didn't listen to him. so i'd say it's a pretty much similar story, only that the nazis received a lot more hollywood films that make it look like a different story.

Thousands of ardent Nazis escaped punishment. Only the most famous at the top got prosecuted.

The US especially grabbed tons of them and gave them jobs. Or used them to build NATO. Hitler's chief of staff was the first Sec-Gen of NATO.

I'm sure at least part of it is because it's not right in the middle of Europe this time, and it's in a place where there's been an almost constant shit show of wars etc. for all our lives.
