A platform that lets you only see people you anpprove and force opt-in to all others is probably a better plan.

For me personally, this is the main appeal of Lemmy. I decide what I want to see.

On YouTube and Instagram, for instance, you do have channels you subscribe to, but the sites/apps show you a lot of other related content.

On YouTube I probably follow maybe 60 channels so that's probably not enough content to show me everyday.
YouTube also has a tab where you can just see your subscriptions. So that's kind of convenient.

That's probably the only nice thing I can say about YouTube.

But on Instagram I follow a few hundred (400ish) accounts. . Mostly artist. Probably 50 are friends I know irl.

Yet most of what comes up in my feed is not these. I have to manually go look at my friends's posts or I never see them. Same with favorite artist.

So "following" seems to mean jack shit on Instagram.
