Maybe solar conversion has gotten more efficient than since last time I paid attention, I rent so I'm not installing it. But considering how stable modern fuels are you could be siphoning fuel from sources for years and years before you start needing to even think about refining it from anything.

How long are modern fuels stable for? An array of panels could still power an EV a century from now. And we're not talking about a zombie apocalypse here where 99% of the population dies overnight leaving all their stuff intact. In a realistic collapse scenario, there won't be any gas to siphon off, as it would all be consumed in the collapse. Gas is the first thing to run out in any crisis, and in a true collapse, people will sell every drop they have of it to buy food.

There just aren't many realistic collapse scenarios that leave large stockpiles of liquid fuels for you to scavenge. This is the real world, not a movie. So if you want a vehicle post-collapse, you'll need to generate the fuel for it yourself. That either means solar panels or biodiesel.

And the best thing about EVs in a collapse scenario is that require very little maintenance or replacement parts.

Though truth be told, the ultimate collapse vehicle is an electric cargo bicycle. Nothing else comes even close to the utility of an electric cargo bike in a collapse.
