Train bridge did exist since 1959. Just didn't see the need for a car one back then I suppose.

    I also assume trucks were not in use to the same degree as they are now, at least compared to freight trains.

    Correct. Trucks were used mostly for military purposes back then, while freight transport was done mostly by train. There was simply no practical reason for such a road link in those days when a perfectly serviceable rail link existed.
