The biggest downside is that they're expensive. I did an ebike conversion on my old mountain bike and that was pretty easy. It works really well too. Buying a nice 5-10 year old bike of your preference and converting it is definitely the way to go if you want to save some money.

    I did that with a dirt cheap Walmart bike and I'm having so many problems, all of them with the dirt cheap Walmart bike parts, the actual e-bike kit has never given me a single problem.

    Yeah I could imagine that would cause some issues. Those bikes don't seem to be the best quality. I suppose the bright side is that there's no reason you couldn't find a used bike somewhere and move the motor and battery to that bike instead. You can't do that with any of the manufactured e bikes that I'm aware of
