I’ve run a 5-axis mill the size of a semi truck and a lathe the size of a city bus with less than a week of training. If I wanted a job as a programmer today, I would need to go back to college for 4 years to be considered in the pool of candidates.

    As someone who recently switched from blue to white collar, I'll say this:

    These fuckers don't do a lick of work. Working industrial, you're expected to perform. Working in-office you're expected to network for the next highest position.

    I guess being able to operate such equipment is one thing, but actually producing good results is another. Does that really take only one week of training? That is quite impressive.

    Anyways that's kinda how I see programming as well. Learning how to do it is one thing, but getting good at it and producing good results is another challenge. Still doesn't require a college though

    Not OP, but a lot of things that require physical skill can be easy to explain and easy to do, but a real bitch to do well or fast. That's where experience comes in. And practice, so much practice.
