I suppose I don't understand the need because I have never needed the feature. An extremely basic distro has always been very stable for me.

    I guess it makes more sense as an end-user if you need rather up to date software, I game a lot so having newer kernel, KDE and mesa versions are a must for me. For distro devs it means they have a much more standard environment since everyone's system is practically identical software-wise where it matters for them.
