Everything I've heard suggests they're a lot more pragmatic about technology and the outside world when push comes to shove than they're given credit for and that their general avoidance of technology is more about intentionally choosing more archaic options than a rigid fanatical proscription on modern technology. Which isn't to whitewash their patriarchal isolationist cult, just that they're less some quaint little fanatics doing silly stuff out in the woods and more something like a more extreme version of how orthodox jews handle all their various restrictions and ritual requirements: devoted and choosing ways that inconvenience and disrupt daily life as markers of their culture and expressions of their faith, but usually willing to bend on or creatively reinterpret those restrictions if it's a matter of survival or they otherwise absolutely have to.
