I’m finishing the 3rd book at the request of a friend and … I’m finding it unfunny at best. They’re were some interesting moments with Donuts but I feel they are becoming spare.

Most monsters are only a derivative name on a 2-3years old meme and I don’t feel no struggle inside Carl

Out of convenience I choose to listen to it and it’s maybe why I find this really dull but comparing it with something like Dungeon and Daddies and D&D it’s much more imaginative

Simply being unfunny (to you) doesn't make it like BBT. That show also employed laugh tracks to pretend it was funnier than it is (maybe you could find something comparable on the audiobook but you can't put that on the book itself and idk because I don't listen) and a lot of misogyny and other humor about stereotypes (which if DCC has, it's done by characters that are supposed to be problematic).

And yeah the struggle is coming, one thing that's easy to forget is everything happens on a fairly short time frame within its universe. That being said I controversially don't really like the audiobook mostly because I don't like the chosen voices for Carl or Donut. Makes Carl seem like some badass action hero type (whereas I see her as more of a bumbling tinkerer), and it makes Donut seem like a cartoon character (when he's a sassy teen who grew up in pageants and is trying to make sense of her newfound sapience and how to have real conversations with people).

Also "most monsters are only a derivative name on a 2-3years old meme", yeah that makes sense, book 3 came out 5 years ago.

Obviously you don't have to like it, but I disagree with your comparison and some of your interpretation and wanted to voice that.

    That’s ok.

The red neck goblin in the first book are a fucking awful meme/joke. The books are made for an « in group » like BBT was that’s where I came with the comparaison

I feel that the writing is circular (and so far) the 3 books are written in the same way with beats I find really predictable… like BBT

But I’m happy to disagree and being called out if I’m hurtful

The content of the books still is what it is, but at least it's somewhat self aware about this dynamic since

spoilerthe personality and memories of dungeon NPCs are canonically calibrated with lowest common denominator mass media appeal in mind
