The Treaty of Fort Jackson (also known as the Treaty with the Creeks) was signed on this day in 1814 at Fort Jackson in Alabama. The treaty was agreed upon in the aftermath of the defeat of Red Stick (Upper Creek) resistance by U.S. forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.
The treaty was the "largest single Indian cession of southern American land", according to historian Michael Rogin - around 23 million acres in Alabama and Georgia. The U.S. forces won with the battle with the help of allied Cherokee and Lower Creek forces friendly to the American side.
The terms of various treaties with the Creek nation would go on to be consistently violated by Americans colonizing the south.
I'm always thinking about this. I think at most I would want to try and do what I can where I'm at right now. I was born and have lived most of my life in the US and even setting aside political motivations, I just never really felt like I'd adapt to my parents home country. I speak the language and I know enough of my family there to where it might be a bit easy, but life is just different over there. There's maybe one or two places where I might be able to settle over there, but IDK...
Coming back to politics though, I kind of feel a bit like VILenin. Much of the Dominican diaspora that I'm around is highly reactionary. Even those with relatively liberal leanings turn into Hitlerites, or better yet Trujilloites, at the mention of Haitians. That alone makes me feel like I couldn't really bear to spend much time there.
