I lost my best friend to alcoholism so I have a complicated relationship with it. He was worse off than your friend, at the end he was almost exclusively buying everclear. Him passing definitely was a bit of a wakeup call, I still enjoy having a few drinks once in a while but I'm definitely more aware of the possibility of it becoming a problem
