My personal theory is that this fits a general trend of people shifting to games as their entertainment of choice because of financial considerations. Games have a high roi? in the sense that the amount of entertainment time you get out of a game is significantly higher than say going to eat out or to a movie (if you don't pirate, and if you do pirate games are still a low cost way to be entertained minus the initial cost of the electronic device you use).
