A lot of people online these days use silly workaround phrases to get around hidden word filters, from "sewerslide" to "sesbian lex" (a trend that really got off the ground years ago on tik tok). Social media sites suppress or remove content containing these words to keep things advertiser-friendly. One nice thing about non-corpo social media such as the lemmyverse is that we don't need to speak in such strange, convoluted, and infantalizing ways. My brother didn't have a sewerslide, he comitted suicide. I don't have sesbian lex, I fuck dykes. More to the point, I find it incredibly offputting that we're allowed to discuss unpleasant concepts but not name them. With the appropriate trigger warnings, anyone here can discuss the sexual violence that came with the Nakba (or the recent Israeli riots calling for the ",right to **** Palestinian prisoners). Or we could talk about the historiocity of claims that the Red Army ****ed its way through Germany at the end of WWII. Everyone knows what I mean with the censored words. [–] diamath@hexbear.net 1 point 1 week ago* (1 child) the r-slur is a slur, calling something r-sluration doesn't erase the impact of the word on someone. And that's what the point of a filter is, to minimize impact. edit: Oh I guess we're talking about specific words and not the word filter in general. Well calling someone a degen is pretty sus so I'm not too worried about some discussion having to work around it. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Keld@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 child) But the thing that is sus is the thing that's allowed. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] diamath@hexbear.net 1 point 1 week ago I mean all kinds of words are allowed, or rather not blocked. Right there. The fact that you think we are talking about a slur rather than another word. [–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago (1 child) it also regularly breaks links and censors parts of west asian names permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] BoarAvoir@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago I would appreciate reports of any incidents of this when they happen so we can improve the filter. The f-slur was formerly the primary culprit for both of those issues due to matching a common three letter sequence, but since tweaking it to match less aggressively, I haven't noticed any instances of the slur filter breaking URLs or censoring names. That change was made back in mid-May so any examples since that time I will attempt to fix. permalink fedilink source parent
