It's an option in addition to all the other buttons and inputs. The main use case is for ratcheting/re-centering gyro controls. But yeah some people like their game to just auto-pause when they let go of the controller, or to bring up a map screen.

I agree it's not so useful at times when you need your digits on all the other inputs, but that's not really what it's for anyway.
