I have a small collection that is currently a complete mess because I mostly use id3 tag to browse them instead of relying filesystem path. Right now I want to sort it into a more organized structure and I would like to ask how are you organizing your music collection, especially with compilation album with "Various Artists".

there's a kind of file system that works by tagging. the BeOS guys invented it, and there are FUSE versions. with a tag-based file system linked to your music storage you can basically create a directory called "funk" and it will automatically fill with every file that has that tag. or you can create like "1970s/upbeat" and you'll get every upbeat track from the 70's in that directory, while still having the files reachable from "funk". there are even specific ones for id3-tags.

all of which to say, don't worry about it.
