Automod bugged out and banned me forever from reddit, i want to explore more Lemmy now but am not sure if Im missing anything good im not directly looking for--i am also kinda autistic and oblivious so if there are instances with a bad history or full of chuds or something a heads up would be swell

I can't remember which instances but there are a few "tankies" that are defederated by a lot of instances.

[-] Carl@anarchist.nexus 19 points 19 hours ago

Yup, the tankie triad: Lemmy.ml, hexbear, and lemmygrad.ml

The three are pretty widely defederated. As a new user, they actually appear extremely calm and accepting. But it’s because all three are very heavily moderated, so anything outside of their extremely narrow overton window gets quashed very quickly.

Lemmy.ml is still federated by a lot of instances simply because the lead dev for Lemmy exclusively posts on .ml. So if an instance admin wants to stay on top of Lemmy development, they’re required to federate with .ml. But it’s also worth noting that any donations for lemmy’s development also go towards keeping .ml’s lights on. The dev has openly stated that he doesn’t do any kind of accounting to keep the two funding pools separated. So any donations that go towards lemmy’s development will also go towards one of the tankie instances.

They also spend a lot of time moderating and keep asking for money to develop lemmy so they don’t have to work.

Between that and funding .ml is why I switched to piefed and donate to them.

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 2 points 9 hours ago

It's too bad they won't allow funding to go towards development of just the software itself, separately from the moderation and other costs of maintaining Lemmy.ml. As it is, Lemmy is a tankie platform first and foremost, and only secondarily offered for use by the rest of the world. You can see this in the development philosophy even: like even Reddit offers a modmail, notification upon moderation events, and ability to see deleted posts (PieFed offers some of this too), though Lemmy offers strong rights to instance admins, and somewhat lessened ones for moderators, but significantly weaker privileges to mere users (who I guess they feel don't deserve to be told upon e.g. being banned from an instance, and instead merely have to find out the hard way?).

Be careful not to use up your voting rations.

I vote all day without running into limits.

[-] Carl@anarchist.nexus 10 points 17 hours ago

Piefed is problematic in its own ways, just FYI. I don’t know what it is about fediverse devs and trying to insert themselves as supermods, but the two seem to be strongly correlated.

[-] manxu@piefed.social 5 points 15 hours ago

How is Piefed problematic? Honestly asking - the only "controversy" I've witnessed was about the list of default instances.

[-] PlzGibHugs@piefed.ca 6 points 12 hours ago

I know Rimu has some really weird opinions about how a social media network should be designed, such as believing that the 90-9-1 rule should be prevented and being against memes, and tends to be overly pushy about implementing these """features""". That said, so far as I'm aware, its not so much problematic as just stupid design decisions.

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 9 hours ago

Adding to this: a lot of the most heinous, truly "problematic" stuff ended up being demonstrably false accusations - like a feature may be opt-in, or at worst opt-out, but either of those is a far cry from being hard-coded as was claimed.

That said, the software truly is "opinionated", pushing its own agenda even if you can opt-out of most of it - an instance admin still has to be wary of each new feature added, especially with the lack of transparency surrounding the announcements.

Although personally I think Lemmy is equally opinionated, just more in the sense of what features it decides not to implement at all.

Both platforms have their advantages, and it seems more important for an end-user to pick a good admin team that reflects their values more than picking a platform, especially if using a 3rd-party app than replaces the UI anyway. (Though secondary to that, I do think PieFed has the strongest edge, especially right now before the release of Lemmy 1.0.)

[-] manxu@piefed.social 3 points 5 hours ago

Thanks to you two. Good to know!

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 0 points 8 hours ago

I find Piefed to be much less problematic than Lemmy which is why I use Piefed and not Lemmy.

What theee

Never knew something was wrong about lemmy.ml, it's not moderated here on my server. But it often has duplicate communities with .world and they are of comparable sizes

[-] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

A lot of the moderation that causes users public grief are usually just timeouts. Arguments over politics and ideology, etc quite often catch folks a timeout. Folks will debate a two day ban for a week.

And with the Fediverse: many community moderators are also admins of instances.

So with that in mind: moderation policies quickly convert drama between users to drama between instances.

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 2 points 20 hours ago

Including OP's too:-). Except lemmy.ml, obviously.

[-] 1egg4u@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

Tbh i made this account through the browsing app i use and am still pretty baby, im only kind of sure what defederated instance even means but I didnt wanna ask stupid questions :')

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 9 hours ago

To add to what Vicinus said, it's like when people get divorced - it's a breakdown of communication between instances, a means of last resort. Here is a recent example when your instance defederated from Lemmy.org:

due to lack of moderation on their side. This instance has open registrations, seemingly zero abuse prevention on signup, including not requiring emails. This leads to a small number of people constantly creating new disposable accounts for various types of abuse with zero consequences. Their admin is the CEO of an ad company, which surely doesn’t affect incentives. They do virtually zero moderation, allowing all these abusive accounts to rampantly harass other instances...

We, as well as other people, including at least one admin of another instance, have attempted to reach out to them about their lack of moderation, but we haven’t received any response at all. At this point there isn’t really anything left besides defederating them, which several other instances have already done as well.

Or here is the historical statement about defederation from Hexbear: https://lemmy.world/post/2498330, though those links are very old and probably not functional anymore.

It's like when someone repeatedly sends you unsolicited spam, even after you beg and plead with them to stop, and so as a last resort you finally block them. Incels arguing against it claim that their right to speak should triumph over your right to not have to listen but... that is simply not true.

[-] Vicinus@piefed.zip 2 points 16 hours ago

My understanding, using the federation-email analogy, defederation is like yahoo mail and gmail users not being able to send and receive emails from each other. In this case lemmy.world and lemmy.ml can't see each others users/communities/posts/comments/votes (someone can correct me if I'm mistaken about any part).

Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz just made a post about instance defederations. TL:DR of the post is only 3 instances/servers have any significant defederation (>5%). 2 "tankie" instances (lemmygrad.ml [67%] and hexbear.net [64%]) and the porn instance (fedinsfw.app [13%]).
