I used to lie and ask for a smoke break and go have a snack outside

Back then yeah. I also had to ask for time off and often got denied.

I once got denied for time off to help a family member who was in the hospital who I was going to drive home.

I told them I'm not abandoning family and took off any way and got fired.

This was after I gave a months notice and marked my schedule unavailable.

I've also got fired for a similar situation but for a college final that I literally could not reschedule or miss.

Now I'm highly qualified and at a much better job. And I still, decades later, have a ton of anxiety about asking for off. And theyre like "if you need off, take off, why are you so worried about it?"

I used to get fresh air breaks.

It was at some point, I worked at jobs that didn't give a shit if you disappeared for 15-30 minutes every hour, as long as you got your shit done.

I recommend everyone find those jobs.

Yeah, seems to be what I have found. Small companies with a skilled workforce so far in my experience have been the best.

Absolutely! Everyone wants to knock on small office jobs. The Office TV show is was a great example. Half the time it's people doing enough to keep the company running. The other half was dumb shit. Nobody was tracking your piss times or micromanaging how many M&Ms you ate.

But I absolutely had my ass micromanaged when I was working in a warehouse or a restaurant.
