Last year Amazon removed the 'download & transfer via USB' feature which allowed old, wifi-less Kindles to get new books onto them.

Earlier this year, Amazon 'ended support' for older (perfectly working) Kindles. What they mean by 'ending support' is remotely blocking those models from downloading new books via the Kindle Store.

Essentially, all of those older Kindles are paperweights now, unless jailbroken. As time goes on, Amazon will most likely take the same steps with more models.

I’ve gone back to paper books. Did you know that small, independent bookstores as well as public libraries are still going strong? Paper books are great! They don’t need to be recharged. They feel nice in your hands. And last a long time when cared for properly.

Time will tell how long e-readers in general can last, but kindles are already dead.

Also full colour graphic novels (as well as illustrated books and photography books) on glossy paper kick ass. E-readers can’t even come close to the experience.

Sure, but I can't carry multiple books in my pocket. I have plenty of paper books, but ereaders are the way to go for me. Just have to invest in ones that are easy to change batteries and screens if they break. My kindle3 battery lasted 14 years before I had to change it. Changing it took 15 minutes. Now should last another 14 years. That's a good run for tech.

But yeah, no changing batteries on paper books. Truth be told tho, they don't make paper books as well as they used to either. For many, the glue binding fails after time.

Oh yeah definitely. If you’re reading multiple books at a time and on the go then an ereader is the only option. I only read one book at a time and mostly in one place (bedtime) so my book just stays where it is until I need it.

Paper books can also be quite a hassle if you have limited space, with no room for a bookshelf. This can be mitigated somewhat if you have easy enough access to a public library. Another option is a community mini library, which if you haven’t seen one looks like this:

There are a few of these in my neighbourhood and they always have books. They may not work for everyone though, since you need to be flexible about what you read. They pair really well with small used bookstores, since you can use those to buy books cheaply and get them circulation after you read them.

Yep, I donated one of these to a school on my street. I also upkeep it by checking on it 2 times a week. But upkeep isn't really needed, since the books get traded back and forth on their own. It one of the more popular ones in my small town.
