[Trump] criticized the Smithsonian Institute and National Park Service sites for allegedly focusing too much on the history of enslavement in the U.S., instead of the country’s “success.”

The US

  • Became a nation in 1776
  • Passed the 13th amendment legally ending chattel slavery in 1865
  • Carried the message of freedom into Texas in 1866
  • Continued share cropping as a wide spread practice through the 1960s (my dad was born in the 1960s)
  • Still enslaves people today

Our entire history is built around slavery. Any discussion of the US should reflect it's sordid past of enslavement, and any success we do see is built upon exploitation.

Also, Jim Crow, the Wilmington massacre, Tulsa massacre. Redlining, the Pearshall plan and the southern manifesto. Then most recently we have a supreme Court simultaneously declaring that racism is over while permitting racist political districts under the guise of "political affiliation". Oppression hasn't ended.
