When Americans (or a lot of westerners) say "materialism" what they mean is "consumerism", and they're trying to frame the fact that no one can afford anything anymore as some kind of personal choice, that someone chooses to be a "post-materialist" which just means too poor to afford all the plastic bullshit they used to buy.
