Yeah it's really hard to completely destroy history if your enemies are dedicated to preserving it. For example Franco couldn't kill the republican narrative of his war, he could only drive it into secrecy.

Soldiers ensure your reign, but scholars legitimize it. Oh and minority groups have a vested interest in maintaining their own scholarship that's proportional to how hard you try to stop it.
