I don’t know how this comment makes me feel because even people at the displacement shelters here in Lebanon are excited to watch the World Cup.
I feel like a lot of people, especially Americans who do not care for football, underestimate how universal this is. It’s much more honest of a distraction from the horrors of life than corpo pop culture
Edit: On second thought I know exactly how I feel. I think this is pretty condescending. The world is fucked. A hostile army is inside my country and I believe we are being pressured to formally allow them to occupy land so we don’t fuck up the peace deal that is being negotiated right now. We have zero agency over what happens in our fucking country, regardless of how democratic or feudal we are.
Let us at least enjoy the football. The Olympics and World Cup were frequently hosted by dictators, doesn’t minimize the feats people achieved or the fun of watching. Bread and circuses is some first world reductionism. People need bread. A bit of circuses is fun. Meeting up with friends and watching the games is always great, especially when you consider the only other thing to talk about is being fucked by war or fucked by work (if you think the economy is rough where you are, it’s probably not worse than here). If it’s at home FIFA isn’t getting any money out of us anyway.
I think it was more commenting on the rest of the world being occupied with the world cup and Israel using that distraction to attack, knowing the coverage will be more limited because of it. By all means take any joy or solace you can get.
I remember there was some user named NEOdraconix or something like that, that asked for help in Gaza, hopefully still alive somehow. They had children with them...
like how heavily it wash pushed too. add in alittle iran war news too. its so unnatural how much airtime its getting, when the past events dint even get noticed by news that much. of course INFANTINO is all in for the distraciton.
It’s crazy how the soccer games are a major distraction for countries..

Sounds like antisemitic terrorism to me.
Yes, yes it is, now bend over.

I’m sorry, are you suggesting that past World Cup events weren’t “on the news”, when 5 billion people watched the 2022 tournament?!
So are video games. What’s the point here?
