I can't get rid of it, it's obnoxious. I've tried filtering the element with my adblocker but it keeps reappearing. As much as I find Reddit useful (unfortunately), especially for information and discussion relating to my country, I will never install their proprietary garbage app on my phone just to use their website.

Oh well. I've used the Internet before Reddit existed, I'm sure I can get used to doing so again.

That's exactly what drove me over here a few days ago. After they locked the API up and boost stopped working I was just browsing the website occasionally. Lemmy is cool so far, just running into a worrying amount of pro-Russian propaganda mental gymnastics. And of course not as many speciality subs yet. I wanna chat about project cars but the largest car community here are those fuckcars loons. Not fun people to be around.

Just block a large chunk of .ml and .hexbear stuff and you'll see 95% less commies.

commies aren't even the issue it's the tankies. definitely a lot more leftist presence on lemmy than average (though that's true for the internet as well I feel) but most of them aren't just whiplashing straight over to bootlicking the anti-western dictators instead.

Commie here, please don't confuse Tankies who are basically just nationalists for non-US aligned countries with me.

So you don't think life is so much better in N. Korea than South like memes say?

Those guys are a strange phenomenon and I get why people block them but it's also fascinating as like a performative art or something.

I'm probably further left than almost everyone I know IRL, but never seen people go that hard into it. It's wild.

I've met people who were like the lite version of them, but maybe they just don't say it to me but do on Lemmy.

No North Korea is an authoritarian regime that doesn't even claim to be communist anymore.

Sadly I'm involved in American left politics which means I have met freaks that think China is better than the US, and would defend the USSR, I'm not quite sure if they'd defend "DP"RK, but frankly they are annoying so I have as little to do with them as possible.

I’ve met people who were like the lite version of them, but maybe they just don’t say it to me but do on Lemmy.

Yeah there is a lot of keyboard warrioring involved, much like white nationalists, get them out from their basement and they'll try and act normal though.

Yeah, in wasn't trying to imply you'd be pro D. P. R. K. in Cincinnati Pyongyang because you identified as commie. More like it's just kind of head scratching to see people dismiss criticism of them or Pol Pot or something, because the US also did atrocious crazy things too, like they both aren't fucking horrific.

I'm just not used to anyone being apologetic about anything a 'communist' country does. Im used to people trying to distance themselves them from the actions of certain countries if they call themselves a communist, which makes seeing people lean into seem interesting. I just didn't want to use the Reddit app so wasn't expecting this major shift

Like the other person said, your Lemmy experience will be a lot better once you block the tankie instances, but I hear you regarding the lack of niche communities. I want to talk about cars too, but unfortunately the "fuck cars" crowd far outnumbers us and they are everywhere on Lemmy. I can't help that I enjoy driving; chill out, people!

Good info on the blocking. I do like hearing different opinions but I honestly thought it was satire at first.

On the "fuck cars" crowd they are seriously barking up the wrong tree. I'm all about trains and public transportation. I take Amtrak when I can. I'd love to see more metro systems. I wish we had more walkable areas. No idea how they plan on bringing this about by picking fights with people who were never against it to begin with. Get car owners on your side, they would love less traffic, bad drivers, and more parking spots.

Once you build up a decent block list, this place gets much better. I just wish there was more activity. It sucks to see a thing I'd like to discuss, and seeing 0 comments on the post.

Did your block list catch the baby with the bathwater?

Only if necessary, some of those babies are still annoying AF.

I block about 150 accounts and 15 communities.

Only one of by blocked accounts still regularly comments on my stuff, (it shows up as an empty comment with no name) I'm still ignoring whoever in the hell it was.

Have you gone to Car Enthusiasts already? https://lemmy.world/c/cars

(I'm not a car person, so I don't have any other recommendations. I just remember seeing posts from that community.)

Thanks, I should really post over there. Gotta be the change I want. Currently it is mostly shared "news" articles which really sucks because automotive journalism is an absolute joke. I want to hear the latest update on Jim from the Midwest trying to restore a Volvo 240 in his garage while dodging the HOA. Kids doing sentry duty, wife fending off neighbors from snitching to the HOA through veiled threats that she is fully aware their flagpole is at least 5 feet over regulation height.

Start a community...what kind of cars you into?

Reddit was the bomb if I had an issue with a car and I needed to chat with 50 people that already solved the same issue on a model specific sub. Can't do that here
