Goon A: "If we kill her, she'll get cool superpowers!"

Goon B: "Yeah!"

they kill Asa, who then kills them

Seriously, what was the plan here?

Yeah it's a pretty baffling plan from Higashi Village. It seems like they were trying to engineer situations where the twins get murdered so that they could awaken their powers but...why do that? why do it in such a hostile way? you've been generally successful at indoctrinating them, just don't reveal that returning doesn't have a 100% success rate and convince them it's their destiny or w/e, maybe train them a little bit as well.

Higashi's motivations just seem pointlessly evil for the sake of being evil. If the goal was to control two superpowered twins, I feel like there was a much more elegant solution.

At least in Yuru's case it seemed like a plan that might have a chance of working. The problem was they tried to do it while his dad was there. TBF he grew up into a total badass so waiting too long would be a problem too, especially if his dad is accompanying him specifically in case the village tried something like this (he seemed to know what was up).

Come to think of it, maybe the parents are why they didn't try the direct indoctrination approach. Maybe they knew it wouldn't work if the parents were opposed (as most good parents would be).

I think if we're going to get any illumination as to why the Higashi have taken this route, it's going to have to come from the parents. Maybe they were both in the know, or figured something out. Maybe there's some true darkness at the Higashi core. I mean, there's eventually going to need to be something justifying Asa's massacre if we're ever meant to take her seriously as a sympathetic character, right?
