Paul Atreides is a classic Tragic Hero.

He has the full arc, including the fall caused by his own hubris.

That's what most people miss, because they only read the first book, or watch the movies.

Frank Herbert seems to have drawn inspiration from Greek Tragedy and the life of Lawrence of Arabia.

T.E. Lawrence sort of created the mess that is the Modern Middle East. Sure the Ottoman Empire was oppressive, but the chaos Lawrence created allowed the region to be carved up and divided by the French and British. Who instantly betrayed Lawrence's allies in that fight.
