Leviticus 11:19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.

2 Peter 2:16 but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A speechless donkey spoke with a man’s voice and stopped the madness of the prophet.

This is a miracle, not a statement that donkeys speak (literally SPEECHLESS DONKEY)

Numbers 22:28 The LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

Again, A MIRACLE

Exodus 20:20 Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won’t sin.”

The entire Bible should clearly be disregarded over the whole bird thing. Unless of courses you are seriously telling me that the ancient hebrews didn't use our western classification systems for animals, but that would just be ludicrous.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Did god write it, or not? Why intentionally leave in any confusing mistakes? He must not be all-powerful.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 0 points 1 week ago

God didn't write the Bible. You're thinking of Islam and the Qur'an.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

I was thinking of 2 Timothy 3:

16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, 17 that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 0 points 1 week ago

Except we know that it was written by people, indeed as scripture itself says it is. St Paul wrote that letter to Timothy, the Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew, etc. Personality traits of the writers are present, such as St Luke who was a doctor having a few medical influences on his work. Matthew was Jewish and explains Jewish prophecy, and St John focuses on Christology, demonstrates a rivalry with St Peter and also shows his dislike for Judas Iscariot. St Paul laments his past.

Read your quote again.

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

What is scripture useful for teaching, reproof and correcting in what? Righteousness, and to equip for good work. St Paul clealry states it's an authority on Morality. Scripture is not useful for taxonomy, the exact political positions of figures at the time, or for determining the age of the earth. Scripture is for equipping yourself to live a God honouring life and it tells the Gospel message of Christ's Virgin birth, Ministry and teaching, His suffering of death, His resurrection and ascension, and that He will return in glory to judge both the living and the dead; that His Kingdom will have no end. In light of that we can be equipped for every good work and know how to honour God. While there are some useful historical nuggets in The Bible (Nehemiah documents the earliest known usage of passports) it's not a taxonomy, geology, astronomy or biology book.

It's a stupid, backwards book encouraging people to join a literal death cult.

Scripture is for equipping yourself to live a God honouring life

The god who chose to make us suffer? Nah, fuck that guy. Glad he's not real. Unfortunately, human bullshitters are killing us in his name anyway.

Interesting how god inspired exactly enough of the bible for you to cherry pick the parts you care about. Interesting that god failed to convey basic aspects of the universe he supposedly created. Weak god.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago

The basic aspects of the universe that God created can be observed and explored. He didn't need to convey it in written scripture, which is the only way a redemption story could have been preserved.

Once again, it appears your argument fell apart but you're trying to claim victory anyway

backwards book encouraging people to join a literal death cult.

The god who chose to make us suffer? Nah, fuck that guy.

Seems to be a heart issue ragher than a head issue. Basically all human suffering is a product of human activity anyway and the rejection of God, God doesn't inflict suffering on us. Suffering is caused by the lack of goodness. But God does promise us the end of all suffering anyway. He will punish all wickedness and exalt the humble and meek. All one must do is accept Jesus Christ as their personal saviour, and let Him transform them. He will have eternal life.

Excuse me? Your excuse is "he didn't have to do it"? So you believe he chose to do it, but fucked it up because he didn't actually care that much?

Why do we need a redemption story instead of just... love?

Once again, it appears your argument fell apart but you're trying to claim victory anyway

Which argument? When did I claim victory? Take care not to project, I don't think like you do.

Seems to be a heart issue ragher than a head issue.

No, silly goose, the heart pumps blood. The brain does the thinking. My brain sees a godless world. My brain sees irreconcilable errors in the bible and its believers.

For the record, I was a believer for a long time. My parents wouldn't have it any other way. They violently brainwashed me, their real child, in the name of their fake god.

See my first and only post for a song I wrote about it.

But irrespective of my own experience, it is factual that we have zero evidence for god's existence.

Basically all human suffering is a product of human activity anyway and the rejection of God, God doesn't inflict suffering on us.

So god is not all-powerful?

Because you can't have it both ways. If he is all-powerful, knew what would happen, knew what we would do with our free will and chose to make us and this world anyway, literally everything is his choice.

Suffering is caused by the lack of goodness.

Nah, it's caused by selfish dipshits like you. And disease. And natural disasters. Did god decide random suffering was necessary in addition to his utterly arbitrary curses?

Why does anyone suffer for choices they did not make?

But God does promise us the end of all suffering anyway. He will punish all wickedness and exalt the humble and meek. All one must do is accept Jesus Christ as their personal saviour, and let Him transform them. He will have eternal life.

It's a death cult. Grow up. My friends are dead because you love this baseless, abusive bullshit more than real life.

You don't know me, yet you make these accusations against me. Why?

I read your song a while ago. If I may- what did John Stowe and Christine do? It appears you also say that your parents physically abused you as an infant. This is not okay. You also said they worshipped a different god to the bible?

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

You don't know me, yet you make these accusations against me. Why?

In the few interactions we have had, you have actively defended a death cult. This behavior harms you, me, and everyone else. I consider it a sign of dangerous unintelligence when someone pretends that magic is real, a staggering lack of reading comprehension to fail to recognize the bible as fiction.

I read your song a while ago. If I may- what did John Stowe and Christine do? It appears you also say that your parents physically abused you as an infant.

Thanks. Yes, they hit my brothers and me when we were young. They stopped when we got older, presumably because they feared we'd start to hit back. My parents violently forced me to attend church three times a week, where we were yelled at by our southern baptist pastor that we would all burn forever in hell if we didn't accept the "love" of Jesus. I have been suicidal all my life.

I wasn't going to accept Jesus until my parents forced me to go to a summer camp. There I was told that if I went to hell, my parents in heaven would miss me. So I "accepted Jesus" and all the abusive bullshit that came with it. I believed in god for decades, but it made me a shitty person. God is your own ego given divine authority.

This is not okay.

I agree. But it's the norm in the bible belt. People laugh at me for pointing out how bad it was, people insist I am weak for crying out instead of acknowledging that it was child abuse. They want to keep spreading their cult until it kills us all because they think they're going to heaven. So I push back on magical thinking, but especially christianity, whenever I can.

You also said they worshipped a different god to the bible?

Everyone does. The god of the bible is inconsistent with the god of the bible, so each believer makes up their own version of him and pretends it's the same.

Specifically, I believed in a loving god, but my parents embodied the cruel and violent tyrant of the old testament.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 0 points 1 week ago

This just comes off as bigotry. Plain and simple. There's nothing unintelligent with being religious or the lack thereof it. Yes, I, like the majority of humanity, believe in the supernatural. There's nothing wrong with that.

If you're referring to your specific upbringing within a family in the Southern United States within a Baptist denomination as the "death cult", then no, I am not defending that. It sounds like they didn't even teach you anything about "believe or you'll perish" but didn't give you anything to believe in.

Specifically, I believed in a loving god, but my parents embodied the cruel and violent tyrant of the old testament.

This is a misconception. Jesus in the New Testament talks about hell and warns of impending doom, in addition to Revelation (more than the old testament). While the Old Testament also demonstrates God's patience and love, teaches you to love your neighbour, etc.

OOPS

Exodus 21:20 “If a man strikes his servant or his maid with a rod, and he dies under his hand, the man shall surely be punished.

Exodus 21:21 Notwithstanding, if his servant gets up after a day or two, he shall not be punished, for the servant is his property.

if the servant is "beat to death", the man will be punished

and as Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament, it mostly doesnt apply to us anymore

[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Bats don't belong on that list.

As for talking donkeys, you can't bring obvious fiction or superstition into the real world by proclaiming "MIRACLE". That's now how reality works.

And "hey the slave didn't die so by all means carry on owning another human being as property" is not the moral flex you think it is.

You haven't proven the bible is accurate or moral. You've only proven that you are brainwashed by your religion into justifying atrocities and need to work on bettering yourself.

Finally, why are you explaining your holy book? A book that supposedly contains the infallible word of a god should not need mere mortals to explain it. God should have hired a holy ghost writer.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 3 months ago
  1. 13 And these ye shall have in detestation among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the great vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the ospray;

Direct Hebrew translation.

It wasnt listing birds nor fowls it was telling you that you shall not eat fowls NOR those things

  1. There are a bunch of modern documented miracles, the Lord works in mysterious ways

  2. As I said, most of that does not apply to us anymore as Christ fulfilled it

  3. Define "accurate" or "moral"

  4. Infallible ≠ Simple

[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago
  1. Choose your own translation doesn't matter if the "word of god" is so malleable.
  2. Nope.
  3. Cop out. Jesus said he wasn't there to invalidate the old stuff.
  4. I'm not your dictionary.
  5. Did not make that claim.

Bonus 6. I'm tired of you.

Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to loosen the law or the prophets. I have not come to loosen, but to fulfill.

He has not come to loosen the laws but to fulfill them

This statement is told because the Pharisees were claiming that he was teaching people to ignore the law of Moses

By fulfill, he means completely live a sinless life that no Israelite had managed, becoming the first and last to do so.

This is also why the sacrificial system was abolished too, because Jesus' sacrifice was enough to the Lord for eternity.

[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

There you go trying to explain and rationalise the divine words of your infallible god. So why even include the Old Testament? If Jesus “fulfilled” it like an Amazon order, it’s over. Stop using it to judge people. No more Leviticus, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Judges, Proverbs…

Christians hate being reminded that the Old Testament is just Torah fanfiction, so you should be happy to lose that stuff.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 3 months ago
  1. If its not simple, some people will have to explain it to other people
[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Is that not the church's whole thing? You'd think they would be better at it.

Shroud of Turin 500+ Witness accounts letters from ROMAN OFFICIALS to Caesar

[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Dude. The shroud of Turin was a known fake in the 1300s when it was made. The church decided to adopt it anyway because it was a great money maker with tourists, even though according to your other reply they don’t mix money and faith. I do love that you lead with the most thoroughly debunked religious fraud in Christian history as your strongest evidence though. That genuinely gave me a laugh.

Witnesses are notoriously unreliable and easily swayed. And you never said witnesses of what. Just vague “miracles” of the trust-me-bro variety? Which Roman officials? Were the letters corroborated by contemporary evidence and writings from reliable scholars?

Magic does not exist. Ghosts and the Easter Bunny are fake too, sorry to ruin that for you.

[-] IAMgROOT@lemmy.wtf 0 points 3 months ago

we didnt have High Res Photography in the 0s

There exist no videos nor photos of Cleopatra, nor Julias Caesar

And proof for tbe Shroud of Turin being fake

To establish the existence of a person without any assumptions, one source from one author (either a supporter or opponent) is needed; for Jesus there are at least 12 independent sources from five authors from supporters and two independent sources from two authors from non-supporters, within a century of the crucifixion.[11] Since historical sources on other named individuals from first century Galilee were written by either supporters or enemies, these sources on Jesus cannot be dismissed, and the existence of at least 14 sources from at least seven authors means there is much more evidence available for Jesus than for any other notable person from 1st century Galilee.[11] Some scholars estimate that there are about 30 independent sources written by 25 authors who attest to Jesus overall.[12] It is notable that some independent sources did not survive, but are broadly referenced directly in the surviving sources themselves (e.g. Luke) or inferred from modern source analysis.[13]

  1. Different translations on directness, not completely different iterations. You can read the original hebrew scriptures
[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk -2 points 3 months ago

As for talking donkeys, you can't bring obvious fiction or superstition into the real world by proclaiming "MIRACLE". That's now how reality works.

That's literally what a miracle is. You're using circular reasoning here. "Miracles that defy natural explanation did not happen because they defy natural explanation, and nothing can defy natural explanation because we have never seen it happen, therefore miracles cannot and did not happen"

[-] JackiesFridge@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

You are typing the words yourself and not getting it. That is definitely some sort of talent.

If there is a claim that something supernatural happened, it better have rock solid evidence to support it. Calling something a miracle because you want it to be true does not make it true. Proving it does. And the only proof of any "miracle" in the bible is - guess what? - cited using the bible. That's what circular reasoning is.

If you make a claim with no objective, testable, flasifiable proof, all you have is a claim. And until you provide robust proof, I will dismiss your claim.

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 0 points 3 months ago

And the only proof of any "miracle" in the bible is - guess what? - cited using the bible. That's what circular reasoning is.

Actually, no. It's not. If I was saying "This miracle happened which is why the Bible is true, the proof it happened is because the Bible says so and it did because it's true" then yes, that would be circular reasoning.

To develop this further because I enjoy infodumping on my special interests, you can divide the Bible into two natures: theological and historical. You start with the historical It is worth mentioning that the Bible is a collection of human writings, which we have divided into 66. (Some were written as the same work but were divided up, like Luke and Acts or the Penteuch, but that's another topic)

So, my thought process is simple. I believe that parts of the New Testament was written first-hand by people who knew Jesus of Nazareth. The pattern of the writings show whoever wrote it was historically familiar with their surroundings. It was generally undisputed who wrote these at the time. They line up enough to be giving a consistent narrative, but not enough to be copying each other in the case of John vs the Synoptics (The synoptics did borrow from each other quite a bit). This is the crux of the matter- Is the New Testament reliable? If you put it under scrutiny and come to the conclusion simply that it is written by people who knew Jesus of Nazareth and that they genuinely believed in what they were saying (considering they got absolutely destroyed by the romans for this belief and didn't stand to benefit as well), then what follows is that Jesus literally rose from the dead, must have really been God and whatever He and the Holy Spirit taught is true. Then, what follows is that whatever Jesus taught is in fact true, so eg, we should love our neighbours. Then since He quoted the Old Testament and also appointed disciples and spoke of the Holy Spirit, it's worth concluding that these writings are also true.

So if the Historical nature of the Bible is true, then Jesus' divinity is true. If Jesus' divinity is true, then the theological nature is true. But the Bible cannot be used to prove the Bible. When I was younger, my skeptical mind was disappointed by a tract proposing the question "Is the Bible True" ans concluding 'yes' because a bible verse says it is. Sure, St Paul who was witnessed receiving a vision of Jesus and being blinded can attest that He is writing with the Holy Spirit as He has the credentials, and Jesus can attest the Holy Spirit was in the Old Testament because He is God and thus has the credentials, but it cannot be used to ascertain whether or not the Bible is historically true.

If you make a claim with no objective, testable, flasifiable proof, all you have is a claim. And until you provide robust proof, I will dismiss your claim

With this standard, good luck trying to prove that most of history happened.

Another issue with this standard- Miracles are miraculous because they aren't really testable - if holding a flame up to a stick of dry wood causes it to catch fire, that's not a miracle, that's just considered science. Your standard is deliberately designed in such a way so that you'd never believe a miracle.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Then, what follows is that whatever Jesus taught is in fact true, so eg, we should love our neighbours. Then since He quoted the Old Testament and also appointed disciples and spoke of the Holy Spirit, it's worth concluding that these writings are also true.

This is a crazy lapse of logic.

Magic isn't real. It's a death cult.
