Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
The admin is laying the groundwork. This is one of their stated goals.
Doing this only in prison is not their aim and we both know that. None of these fucks genuinely only wants to take care away from prisoners.
I'm not denying that, but that's precisely why we have a responsibility to the community to not post misleading, alarmist titles that create the false impression that they are already setting these plans in motion right now. This is panic-inducing clickbait.
I agree. This headline outlines a plausible but not confirmed scenario.
"New Trump Administration actions may pave the way for trans adult care ban" is accurate and doesnt undersell the urgency.
Something I’ve had to start practicing (recommendation from my therapist) is rating distressing headlines somewhere on the line from imminent to theoretical. Do they want to round us all up and put us in camps and outlaw HRT or maybe just start executing us in the town square? Sure. I’m not naive about that. But there are differences in preparations I would be making to start DIY HRT, for example, if this was becoming law tomorrow vs if it’s still some wish stored in Trump’s balls. It’s not something I need to call my provider over because they’re going to say the same thing they said the last three times I asked. The specifics matter.
I think you would be wise to prepare for the worst, hope for the best. You never know when diy will be disrupted, even if it's by vendors willingly exiting the market. I think it would be foolish to not have a stockpile of hrt right now.
Yes, i am aware of that. Given that i am nowadays physically incapable of producing enough of any sex hormone ever again to not suffer from ostheoporosis without HRT, i obviously have contingency plans for everything because i can read the writing on the wall. But that involves knowing were we are, not assuming. When you're under threat, you can't afford to jump the gun, you also need to avoid getting paralyzed by hypervigilance. I'm saying this as somebody who's spent the last year hardening at least the part of my community that's closest to me against what's to come - and for a good while, it's been part of our support structures that we regularly had to calm people down who are entering a doom spiral from hypotheticals that they extrapolate from the news. It's less common atm, but i've seen over and over again how that happens, which is why i am speaking up about this.
I'm not saying "don't worry, your gender affirming care is safe" because it very obviously isn't secured enough anywhere in the world. But nothing in that article tells people how to do DIY HRT, what to keep in mind when stockpiling HRT and supplies, how to set up a safe comms infrastructure, how to build functional support networks for your fellow trans people, how to secure queer meeting spaces against fascists, how to organize resistance, how to emigrate if things get too severe etc. etc.
All it does is give an overview over how the US argues for torturing trans people in federal prisons. Which can be useful when you build a bookmark library for debunking transphobic talking points, i'm not saying the article is bad or useless or anything. I'm saying that yelling at a site full of trans people "Trump is now preparing to ban all gender affirming care" is not a survival strategy, it's yelling fire in a crowded place.
I was responding to this specifically, I think you should prepare to start DIY exactly the same as if this could become law tomorrow. It won't, but if that situation comes to pass you are much better off prepared and having guaranteed access then being one of the many people rushing around when the fire has engulfed the stage. From their comment it sounds like they might not be so I was trying to encourage them to take early precautions.
That community sounds nice, I wish I had anything like that. Not for lack of trying to connect with all the lgbt people in my life, trying to get more of them in my life, etc..
Okay but do you disagree with this? Earlier you agreed they were laying the groundwork. Does that not mean basically the same thing as preparing? Honestly that feels like a more advanced stage to me. You plan/prepare, then lay the groundwork, then do the thing. I don't really understand your objection to "prepare" but find "laying the groundwork" to be fine. Maybe laying the groundwork is more accurate, I mean it seems to me they have already prepared and come up with their strategy.
I woke up for a few hours in the night and so didn't edit the title or provide quotes like I usually prefer to. Sorry.
I don't have a survival strategy. I have a loose, hrt-won't-get-taken-away-from-me strategy. Everything else feels entirely out of my control, including if surviving is even worth it in the first place. I am not optimistic on that front. But yea, sorry, if they do go through with this I will probably not be surviving long. I make several types of post, including things I'm worried about, but no not survival guides atm.
