What to do if i want to make games oneday, but im unsure where to start? (piefed.zip)

Not sure if this goes here or not? but ive dabbled a little here and there with different things but i lack like every skill to make a game. Im wondering what aspect or skill is worth getting better at, for gamedev?

I cant code, i cant draw/3d art, i cant make music, im bad with ideas, etc.

Where do i even begin or what would you advise?

The tools don’t matter much when starting out. Unreal and Unity are terrible recommendations for beginners. Even installing them is a challenge to a noob.

    They are both one click installs basically. In any case, that would only leave Godot which has a lot less tutorials. I'd love to know the percentage of games that do not use either of these three. He wants to learn how to make games, what would you tell him to do? I literally started on unity and didnt know any of it, I learned to code with it lol.

    Have you actually tried using them? Installing the right version for whatever other libraries you’re using is everything but easy.

    Installing is the easiest part anyway.

    I told him to first make a card or boardgame from paper.

    I learned to code from nothing with it so obviously I more than tried them. It's not difficult enough to warrant your comment. He wants to learn clearly.

    This is a programming sub and you told him to make a boardgame.

    It’s great that you’ve had success.

    They want to make games. I told him a way to learn about game design without using a computer.

    Programming is just one tool and I would say not the most important one to make a good game.

    Learning to code is difficult.

    Making board games isn't going to make it easier, you learn by doing.

    I think what bothers me is that your advice is fixated on becoming a game designer. It's also a small part in the sense that you will have one guy doing it in a staff of 50. It's also arguably the hardest job to get and you need A LOT more than just having built a board game or two to get the job.

    By using unity, he will touch on a lot of stuff and have a chance to find out what he likes. Building board games is only oriented to the game design part and won't really get him anywhere.

    Not trying to be a dick here but bad advice imo.

    There are many ways to get into making games.

    OP is a beginner and a little intimidated. So giving them an alternative to giant complex SDKs can help them see more options.

    You can write a game in any programming language and don’t even need a game engine.

    Look at great games like A Dark Room for example.

    I wanted to show OP, that they can already make games with skills and tools they have.

    OP is very far away from making this their job.

    There are tons of indie games with teams smaller than five.

    Of course it takes more to get a job than designing a small game yourself. I never said anything like that.

    This is about learning, not making money.

    Game design skills are good to have regardless of you specialize in something else later. Even as a graphics dev, or sound designer it will make your work and communication mich better.
