People are recently posting picture posts and I think it's time we revisit our community rules just in case this is not what people want.

Would you change the rules for the c/asklemmynsfw community in any way and if so how?

Discuss and vote on potential changes.

Absolutely no politics involved. -- It shouldn't be an issue but it's better to state it plainly. Should be rule 1. Instabanable and permabanable. I HATE politics. I'm not the only one. Politics only brings arguments and threats.

No people selling sex, or pictures of sex, or sex acts. No looking for hookups. -- Is a discussion area not a hey wanna pay to play or pay to watch/see. People trying this end up spamming communities with the same crap over and over. If you are searching for a playmate go elsewhere. These are together because the majority of the hookup posts I've seen elsewhere end up being pay to play. Discussion about paying should be heavily limited because that will invite the vultures of "I'm available" to come in.

No illegal acts. -- This is not limited to but should include children. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, if you think it's OK come visit me personally I will introduce you to a friend of mine. Again it shouldn't need to be a rule in a civilized world but there are people who will try at some point. I'm pretty sure that is a basic Lemmy rule but should be clearly stated community rule.

Lemmy is growing and will continue to do so which will bring more junk and issues.

    Politics is extremely hard to define generally.

    "How would you react to a stranger of the same sex buying you a drink?" is, IMHO, a perfectly acceptable question for this community that could easily be considered political by some. More borderline would be "Would you sleep with someone from the opposite end of the political spectrum? How about date?" Again, I think these could lead to some fun discussion without it becoming a problem.

    Regarding illegality, lemmynsfw's rules already cover that pretty well. I wouldn't put a blanket ban on discussing anything illegal. The question discussing recreational substances recently comes to mind. Plus I wouldn't want to rule out same-sex, anal, or anything else I consider perfectly ethical that is deemed illegal in some places in the world.

    That is where the community needs to chime in and define what is acceptable.

    Personally if you are asking if someone wouldn't have sex with someone on the other end of the political spectrum is asking for trouble and is a political discussion. The political question is front and center. If it ends up with fighting rather than a discussion it will only turn bad. Once fighting/argument happens we will begin to be just like the other communities with infighting, take for instance the current dustup on c/asklemmy over Rule 6.     Asking for an opinion of someone asking to buy a drink is not. The political aspect is secondary and only comes about when someone has an issue with the act and feels it should be illegal, though it is generally accepted as not. This also segways into the legal aspect section. This is an English language community. In English speaking countries and culture we have a pretty standard set of national laws that deal with acts that are in an of themselves are considered illegal and immoral. That would be a great place to start. Adding the illegality statement also allows the community to self police and quickly identify issues on top of the instance wide rule.

    Counterpoint:

    In my experience, the only people concerned with "keeping politics out" of a space are people who don't belong to politicized groups or hold politicized identities (thus affording them the comfort to not pay attention to politics or discuss it), and the majority of the time it's because they themselves hold "political opinions" that would get their nose broken if they said them without a keyboard to hide behind. I'm not super comfortable with capitulating to that crowd, especially when the rules would more often punish people talking about their experiences than aren't the cisheteronormative default.

    Overly harsh? Maybe. But if I'm trapped in this political moment, I want to be able to discuss what that means for personal life, and that includes how personal politics can interact with sex ajd relationships.

    I don't subscribe to anything political nor do I participate in political groups. I believe that politics have a place and those people who would like to discuss them are free to do so in a place where politics are fully accepted as a topic. I don't believe anyone of celebrity or power should discuss their person views on any political situation. And I choose to keep as much of my political views to myself because they are my opinion, we all know the rude and crude description of opinions, so I choose not to stink the place up.

    If someone wants to continue a discussion in a more political fashion they would be free to do so but outside of this community. They could do so via private messages, direct contact, or even another community they create dedicated to expanding on the idea of their political view of the sexual topic. I would encourage them to simply state that they would like to discuss a political aspect of a conversation and move to a new post in let's say c/AskLemmyNSFW-Politics with a link to the discussion. They could go so far as to create their own Lemmy instance and discuss any topics they choose including those deemed violations of human rights. But those people who choose not to participate can easily avoid the discussion and the root community can focus on their chosen area.

    Therein the political discussion can happen but in a place that is dedicated to the political aspect. I'm guessing everyone has topics they choose not to view and/or participate in.

    Yes, of course most people have things they dont want to read a post about. The way they accomplish that is by not clicking links to discussions they have no interest in. Maybe we should consider that an option instead of one population exerting control over what another population occupying the same space can say in such a broad way?

    So you currently subscribe to everything available on Lemmy? Reddit? Facebook? Twitter?

    If that answer is no and you don't view every discussion you already subscribe to exactly what I am stating. A few things are going to happen in this community, it will happen again and again and has happened before. There will be a difference in opinion and people who choose not to be a part of the community will move on to another community, platform, etc. to find the niche where they fit and help to shape it.

    The choice right now is the shaping of this communities future. At the same time someone is not going to be happy about the direction, allowing discussions to continue in another community is a good way to help the current community thrive with minimal conflict while focusing on a niche. By taking a particular conversation to another community will allow community participants who want to explore another aspect to do so freely without taking topics out of this communities niche. It will then become another thread that connects us all in its own unique fashion.

    Yes, that's correct. While I dont use Twitter or Facebook, I don't subscribe to every community on Lemmy, and in the communities i do subscribe to, I don't open every post -- least of all the ones i actively don't want to see the content of. It's very easy to simply not read the things I have no interest in seeing, and if I do happen across a discussion I'm uninterested in, I realize ky mistake and close it.

    This really isn't rocket science, dude. Have some personal responsibility for your media diet and stop worrying about everyone else's behavior. It's a far less stressful way to live.

    I agree with all your comments especially in regard to politics. Even if it doesn't start out purely as left vs. right, you will have someone who just has the right answers for everyone condemn a post or a comment because it offends their political leanings. I never can understand these people. This is a meaningless social media platform no different than all the rest.... in a group that allows posters to ask sexual questions....yet some people just have to impose their opinions on everyone else.

    I've moderated for a couple communities and private gameservers in the past. I've also seen arguments begin over perceived slights let alone political opinions devolve into chaos. It's made worse by the perceived anonymity and lack of recompense.

    A community needs clearly defined rules to allow discussions about sensitive topics so that a it can remain polite and foster communication that is of high quality information. This requires people to be polite and respectful... political opinion, so far in my experience, is anything but. Studies show that polite communication can enhance the perceived quality of information shared, making users more receptive to ideas and responses.

    Adding it to the community rules reinforces that it is not acceptable.

    Edit: A thought just occurred to me. The LemmyNSFW Instance rules are not shown to users on other instances. That means adding the rule is pretty much needed since someone self hosting could assume that the community allows any NSFW content.
