I've moderated for a couple communities and private gameservers in the past. I've also seen arguments begin over perceived slights let alone political opinions devolve into chaos. It's made worse by the perceived anonymity and lack of recompense.
A community needs clearly defined rules to allow discussions about sensitive topics so that a it can remain polite and foster communication that is of high quality information. This requires people to be polite and respectful... political opinion, so far in my experience, is anything but. Studies show that polite communication can enhance the perceived quality of information shared, making users more receptive to ideas and responses.
