troglodyte left right and centre
I live in the US and in the few decades I never heard a right-winger use that word. It seems insane now but long ago many republicans used to see themselves as worldly and intellectual and liberals the opposite. In the 1980s when I was old enough to be interested in politics - it's possible I saw or heard a republican like William F. Buckley use it. I can imagine somebody like him using the word to describe any liberal who in their mind was uncouth, unrefined, unsophisticated with "radical" interests like a fondness for the Grateful Dead or granola or something.
Way back in the day - republicans used to be (very) unintentionally funny. Now they tend to be tedious, corporate drone humorless freaks like Ted Cruz.
