I know that "females" is seen as icky when describing women or girls, but since not all women were born female and not all born females are women, would that make addressing them as such transphobic?

In most situations, it would be rather strange to refer to a trans man as "female". Might get away with it if it's specifically about their chromosomes and you're writing a scientific text about that, but that doesn't really come up that often.
