At least with Boost (my favorite reddit & Lemmy app).

This lets you circumvent ads/recommendations and other bs, too.

    They run ads and subscriptions to afford the API, which is paid to spez.

    This is just incorrect. Nobody pays for API in Boost, it uses the API directly. The official app was shut down after the API got restricted.

    The restriction is 3rd party apps have to pay for API.

    There are hacks that keep Boost working but the ads are Reddits.
