Students in Greece are protesting over the looming legalization of private universities. I'm sure no explanation on why those are bad is needed fidel-bat

cryptofascist We just need to allow for competition, with testing we can make sure the right people will still get a good education!

There are issues with university education but a lot of them (in my opinion) are just due to austerity, with the consequences of the austerity being used to justify further privatization.

Go north a bit and there are 2 competing criteria to get free university education:

  • you're in top % of your class

  • you've collected a certain number of points by passing courses

I've seen both in action, and the top student model is pretty shit because it encourages backstabbing instead of solidarity. Even if there's no direct backstabbing, people are less likely to help their colleagues because it can negatively impact them.
