Cory Doctorow’s insta-classic blog post introducing the idea of “enshittification”

Some smarty brain over on kbin had this linked in a thread about what the absolute fuck is going on, on the internet lately - and it does a fantastic detailed postmortem on what I'd just kind of half-ass said in a previous comment in this silly self community.

But it IS important to understand what's happening because it's not an isolated incident.

We do need to rethink how the the 90s cut media monopolization loose via the Telecom Act. It was the true beginning of the enshittification.

"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

This is related to societal collapse because the Internet is the modern-day Library of Alexandria, and the way a handful of bug-eyes salamanders constantly enshittify, monetize and control platforms is indicative of a culture that values greed over the accessibility to modern humanity's collective knowledge.
