The parent company was more or less commissioned by Hitler. It's why it's called the folks car. Everyone was supposed to get one (in German propaganda at least)

Audi was Auto Union and mainly produced luxury cars. Audi as it is today, is a merger of several German companies.

BMW's focus were airplane engines and motorcycles (especially for the German army). One of the very first jet engines produced was a BMW jet engine, first tested on the Messerschmitt Me 262 fighter jets and later also used on the Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger.

Mercedes-Benz' (then Daimler-Benz) focus were military trucks, tanks, airplane and boat engines.

Porsche was not yet its own car brand, since Ferdinand Porsche was one of Hitler's engineers. He designed military wagons at Volkswagen like the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen.
