And not ditching them would cost them €511B

Cost who?
I thought America didn't need anybody else? According to the clown in charge.
Linux is free bitch
Totally worth it and we’ll recoup a large chunk since the money will be going to companies that pay their taxes. Not doing this isn’t even an option anymore.
Cool, an €115 billion injection into the European economy and jobs which we would have wasted offshore for no benefit, let's do it!
Translation: US Tech giants discovered their hostile actions cost them their customers.
And staying with the USA might cost 100 billion per year in overpriced fossil fuels contacts and cleaning up USA's military adventures.
Even if it where true: That is money well spend. 115 billion over 10 years is not that much for 27 countries combined anyway.
Afaik the EU27 public expenditure for 2025 alone was 9.32 trillion[1]. So we are talking about ~11 billion a year vs 9.32 trillion which is ~0.1% of public expenditure of the EU27. I think if we want we can handle that.

Edit:
Am I right in thinking that the study does recognize a spending shift towards the EU but doesn't treat that shift as an offset against the 115 billion?
They really don't grasp that the point of money is to use it to do things. Things that benefit, not just you, but your family, your community, your nation and humanity in general. They really think just sitting on giant piles of cash like a nesting bird is what it's there for.
I swear the richer you get the dumber it makes you. Like I honestly believe there's a point at which you get rich enough that the "Skills Atrophy" you see with people who get hooked on AI actively starts breaking down your own brain.
Oh no... They'll have to find some other countries to funnel their tax avoidance through. Might I recommend Russia now that Trump is pals with Vlad?
“Luxembourg would apparently take the biggest hit, with the study putting the cost at €1,711 per worker over ten years. Denmark (€905), Austria (€900), and Finland (€864) also face hefty bills, as does Ireland (€856)”
Those are the costs but aren't there also earnings? The study seems to ignore the fact that money not spend in the US will be spend in the EU.
Translation: Luxembourg workers, who are some of the highest paid people in the entire world, would have to pay 171 euros per year to build out a European tech force that would benefit themselves.
That sounds... awesome?
So… the countries where hyperscalers avoid tax will no longer have hyperscalers avoiding tax in it. And somehow that’s framed as a bad thing?
forcing businesses to move away from existing cloud infrastructure could trigger expensive software redevelopment projects, with code rewriting and re-architecting accounting for 69 percent of its estimated costs.
~70% of it just to move to another hosting provider? hmmmm
From my software development standpoint that could actually be. AWS and azure have a hefty user lock in that could cost a lot to migrate out of
Yeah, going from AWS to Hetzner will require doubling your SRE/platform/infra/whatever-you-call-them staff, clearly.
We're on AWS at work. I use Hetzner personally.
The main issue with switching is the services. On AWS we use KMS, SQS, DynamoDB. On hertzner we'd have to run an instance with software for that ourselves and then rewrite systems and do migrations etc. That's the expense.
Also KMS has no alternate because it's not just software. It's a HSM. So where do we store the master keys on Hetzner?
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do it, not up to me unfortunately.
