We've been armed for a very long time. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 hours ago I'm aware the JSDF is bigger than most countries militaries, its growth, along with how many young folk take issue with Article 9 and think Japan is the font from which Asian civilization flows, and any stagnancy was due to Koreans and Chinese stealing Japanese technology is concerning. That said, it's really hard to dislike Kawasaki just because they make military equipment. permalink fedilink source parent [–] CobraCommander@quokk.au 3 points 5 hours ago* (3 children) I’m sure if China disarmed, it would be easier to convince Japan to not do this. Sadly having an antagonistic expansionist neighbour with the worlds largest military on their borders, it’s hard for anyone to feel secure. Especially when so many young Chinese fall for the century of humiliation propaganda and believe themselves to be the centre from which asian civilisation flows, one must be cautious. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 3 child comments replies: [–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 hours ago (2 children) antagonistic expansionist Yes, look at all the countries they've invaded. century of humiliation propaganda What? There is a fundamental difference between China and the country who spent the century before WWII imperializing asia and who never had a meaningful break from the war-era political machine; with many of the same politicians or their kids joining the LDP who's been in power and rewriting Japan's history ever since. That's not to say I don't take issue with the historical perceptions of Chinese people I talk to over here, but there's no equivalent. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] CobraCommander@quokk.au 3 points 4 hours ago (1 child) Yes, look at all the countries they’ve invaded. No look at the countries they plan to invade, and their ever increasing territorial claims. What? The CoH is used as revanchism, plain and simple, it gets citizens frothing at the mouth to reclaim lost glory and is used to push jingoism. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 1 child comment replies: [–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 1 point 4 hours ago* look at the countries they plan to invade The ones that have US bases? Yeah that's how you deal with US bases when the US puts bases all around your country with the intent of using them to invade you. their ever increasing territorial claims They've only given up land territories, and in the case of the ocean, are expanding in response to countries hosting hostile military bases. Before the 9 dash line, they had the 11 dash line, they gave 2 dashes to vietnam after it was made clear vietnam wasn't going to host a US military base. Then they invaded them a few years later, but dogshit foreign policy resulting from the sino-soviet split is another discussion. permalink fedilink source parent
