The Trump administration has imposed sweeping new sanctions on the International Criminal Court as part of its campaign to dismantle what it describes as a "rogue" tribunal, threatening to cripple its operations. Following the move, the European Union said it was "ready to take any necessary measures to enable the court to carry out its work".

Recall that every US President has had the same demand that Trump has:

They have all demanded that for the US to recognize the court, it would have to enshrine permanent immunity for US citizens and actions.

That would be: Bill Clinton, Dubya(the torturer), Obama, Trump and Biden.

Bush Sr supported the initial concept of it.

Clinton signed it, but held off ratification because of a lack of US immunity: https://1997-2001.state.gov/global/swci/001231_clinton_icc.html

Dubya renegged on that signature for the same reason: https://www.jstor.org/stable/40203935

Obama was friendlier than Dubya, but still held back from signing onto the ICC because of lack of US immunity. https://justiceinconflict.org/2014/02/04/unfortunate-but-unsurprising-obama-undermines-the-icc/

    Trump is well known.

Biden held a hypocritical stance where he helped the ICC against Russia, but decried it when it prosecuted Bibi and Israel. Still also held the concept of US immunity as a requirement: https://www.justsecurity.org/87707/bidens-cooperation-with-the-icc-is-a-step-toward-embracing-reality/
