I posted earlier about initial impressions and how VR streaming wasn't working on Fedora but I did finally get that working so I figured I'd post an update.

Last week I had installed some codecs that were recommended to me by a user in the other thread but that only got the "pancake" game streaming working. After installing all of the codecs for AMD here, the VR streaming started to work: https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Multimedia?highlight=%28%5CbCategoryHowto%5Cb%29

I'm not sure what specific ones fixed it, but I switched to full ffmpeg, installed the additional codecs, and did everything in the "Hardware codecs with AMD" section. I've seen some other troubleshooting tips that say to add an ENV variable to the launcher, but I didn't have to do that.

After a reboot it worked without any problems (don't forget to pair the wifi dongle from the headset).

Non-VR game streaming is just about perfect. I didn't notice any lag when playing Hollow Knight: Silksong nor was there any stuttering. However, VR streaming still needs some work. I loaded up Half-Life: Alyx and successfully streamed to my headset, but it stuttered quite a bit and often dropped the video for a few seconds. When streaming from Windows on the same PC it worked much better but did still occasionally drop. My play area is in the same room as the PC so I doubt it's a distance thing.

You'll definitely want to use the SteamOS and SteamVR betas to try this, but it does feel like I'll be able to finally get rid of my Windows partition soon.

Installing the codecs and the correct version of mesa got streaming to work on Fedora for me too, but with a lot of stuttering. I later found out that I needed to unplug my steam controller puck, and then streaming worked perfectly

I’m on the fence about trading my rtx 4080 for an amd card so I can run steamos or if I wait for Nvidia support first.

Have tried big picture and beat saber natively but haven’t taxed my frame at all yet.

Valve is developing support for Nvidia so it shouldn't be long. That being said, you might get more than it's original price for the rtx card. If you ever want to mess around with local AI, an rtx is better for it so there is that to think about but it might not be an issue.

Yeah part of me wants to be patient for those reasons, and I’ve seen that I would get more for this card on resale than I paid originally.

Just not sure how long until I can get an Nvidia support d experience with steamos
