Men will know that this is actually toilet humor.

I have a favorite treadmill. I don't care if you're next to me.

do it at your personal gym, or wait, like everyone else.

Wait until the one I like and the ones on either side are empty?

Sure, unless you also have a favorite public toilet stall that you allow company to join you in.

I'm sure I've been that guy before at my gym, but it has nothing to do with the people to the left or right of me. Counterintuitively, its actually probably the least creepy choice at my gym to take that middle treadmill.

At my gym almost all the cardio machines (including treadmills and stationary bikes) are all in long rows facing one another...except 3 treadmills on one aisle, one stair machine on another aisle, and one stationary bike on yet another aisle. So unless you actually like staring at someone else 5 feet in front of you, with both of you exhaling from exertion right each other's faces, those 5 machine are you only choices. Any time one of those non-facing-someone-else-machines is open, I'll choose those first. I don't think I'm the only one that's noticed this because those seem to be the most occupied machines. I'd much rather be standing next to someone with both of us facing the same direction away from one another rather than having to stare and breath on each other as we work out.

I cannot count the number of times this exact phenomenon has happened to me when parking my car in an empty carpark.

Honestly, I occasionally do this. I'm not interested in other people or interacting with them while they're running, just in walking as briefly as possible from the cardio area to the weights. Which seems silly, but in my defense, I am profoundly stupid while exercising because of anemia.

I also need a partner to keep me from repeating reps and sets. On my own, I ended up doing 800 bodyweight squats once, when I meant to do only 500. My hamstrings were pounding and my quads itched from how badly I fucked up.

    Having a spotter is fine.

Being close to women you don't know that went out of their way to exercises at the farthest part of the gym for a reason is precisely why they too are

not interested in other people or interacting with them.

Try to explain that to me as I stare blankly at you from oxygen deprivation. I agree with you now, but anemia is a helluva drug

500 seems like a high number already

You build up over months and years until it feels basic. Try to tack 5 more onto every set and you'll get there quickly enough, as long as you don't injure yourself.

I'm not feeling my best but I imagine I could do about 50 bodyweight squats in one sitting without issue. Within the month, I could turn that into 150 as I'm reconditioned. By year's end, 350. 500's very easily attainable so long as you make certain to strengthen your ligaments.

High reps aren't really my goal, I just want to look trim and be able to keep up with my kid. What was your goal with that set?

Just to maintain mobility and see whether I could reach 1000+ in average sessions. It was an incremental game played with my own body. Unfortunately, I topped out around a consistent 700, before deciding that 20 constant minutes of squats wasn't fun. It did let me stop from a full sprint within 2 steps, which was a fun parlor trick.
