Forget where I heard it, but I remember reading somewhere that the prevalence of spousal abuse and sexual violence (esp among children) was tiny in "the olden days" (compared to modern times) when the vast majority of people lived in 1 or 2 room shacks and only spiked as humanity entered the industrial/Victorian era where a room for each person (plus the privacy that entails) became the norm.

The thesis was that there used to be no where to hide abhorrent behavior, so your family and/or the people you lived with learned about it and were able to stop it / call for help to stop it.
