He has over 6000 hours in Rust. I dont play official rust, Ive dabbled on the PVE side. There are not many games we play together despite that we both play videogames a lot. There isnt much over lap though in what we enjoy.

So I was absolutely stoked when he told me to buy Valheim. I played it a bit before (before I turned into a creative sandbox) and didnt find it too hard, and fun, and figured we could give it an honest go together.

He "isnt sold" on it. Is disapointed it hasnt grabbed him too. Im beyond sad. Without him, I dont think I will make it much longer without him, I usually make combat very easy for myself, but really wanted to do a vanilla playthrough with him. Im also upset he cant play our world without me (the host) being logged on. We are on xbox, so no, we cant get a server.

The controls are bugging him the most. He did map his controller finally last night. But, honestly, when you have 6000 hours in a game, and it is the only game you play, yeah, deviation from that is gonna be hard.

Im playing quiety just doing valheim things, and hes on his side cussing haha. oye. :( fuck.

We beat the first boss last night. My dude been running into the black forest prior to that, I told him to stay out of there before we go for the boss. Dont listen, have a bad time I guess.

I know the game is about to get grindy. He'll grind rust for 12 hours, but I dont think hes gonna be able to handle it, and I got a feeling imma be on my own for a time. I really wish he could play my world when I wasnt on, its gonna kill us actually playing this game together.

Does he like building stuff?

The thing I enjoy the most about Valheim is fixing up the ruins I come across and building infrastructure like bridges and pig farms, taming wolves to guard the base and exploring. If he has interet in those things see if he wants to buipd a little farm or a cabin in the woods as it encourages exploring for materials and trying new things. Whwn building you get back all the materiala if you break it down so trying new things doesn't cost anything!

Combat is the leaat fun part of Valheim for me. I only killl bosses to get requirements like crypt keys so I can mine iron ore to build bigger and more elaborate structures.

Figure out how to have your setups together to play "together" or compromise and mod Minecraft to have guns and Norse gods

Not 1:1 but maybe PalWorld then? The difficulties are way more adjustable and it’s basebuild-y but you can also run around and fight stuff without immediately having your butt handed to you, if you so choose.

My S.O. and I have similar dynamics where they’re waaay more into PVP/PVE and I mostly do chill stuff but we’ve been bonding over PW and it’s been really nice.

Seems a bit weird that you’re wanting to have a persistent server. Wasn’t the point if this endeavour that it was something you both wanted to do together?

My partner and I have our separate games that we play, but when it comes to shared open worlds that we play together, the emphasis is definitely on the together aspect - neither of us would even think to try playing without the other there.

Perhaps one of the issues is trying to find games that are like Rust. They might never live up to Rust for him and some of the magic might be ruined by trying to compare to Rust.

If it comes down to it, you might consider playing games that are radically different from Rust to escape that measure.

There are lots of great co-op focused games that really only work with two players - the We Were Here series, It Takes Two, Split Fiction, Lego Voyagers, Portal 2 co-op, etc.

My partner and I have also enjoyed parallel play of single-player story driven games, including Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Plague Tale, etc. We wait for one another at the end of any given section and can share discovery of secrets along the way.

It can even work well with “open world” games like Hogwarts Legacy, Red Dead, the Witcher, etc. We get chunks of time to independently explore and do our own thing / menial side content, but then wait to start main story or big side quests together.

Could you play some co-op games together that don't require commitment and grinds? Something like Dome Keeper, We Were Here, or Trine?

We are on xbox, so no, we cant get a server.

I'm pretty sure that is not accurate
