If you don't have to deal with kids it's hard to explain how dominant Fortnite is. The problem with Fortnite here is that it's essentially crack for kids, and when I hear people saying "they should make Fortnite work in Linux" I hear "drug dealers should sell their goods in nice places". It's not in the pusher's interest to make their pay-per-hit product usable in any way that empowers the addict.

Frankly I just use Linux on everything and play dorknite via game streaming. You can use a chromium based browser and a controller and it works just fine
My kids use Fedora, and hate windows with passion (I wonder where they get that from), so they only play games that work in Linux and they can play on steam. Their friends and cousins have adapted to them, instead of the other way around (though I'm pretty sure they still play Fortnite and other 'winblows only' shot without my kids). I made my kids understand that anyone that does not respect their wish to control their own lives and privacy is not worth keeping around anyway, and it has worked fine so far. Also, they have time limits for gaming and watching TV, they read and play music instruments way more than using any type of tech.
That's really great! 👌🏻
Make no mistake, it's a real chore getting kids to understand, but showing them scary shit that happens to others out there for not taking care of their privacy is a seriously useful crutch. I think I've made my kids as paranoid as I am, they even bitch at my wife every so often about her still using WhatsApp 🤣
You could just forbid them from playing it 😂 or use a vm with gpu passthrough. Idk how setting that up is anymore, but it used to be a bit of a bear
edit: I forgot about kernel level anti cheat. Propaganda might be your only option ✊

Had a look, Epic refuses to let Fortnight run on proton bc it would add value to the steam deck
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Probably just a waiting game, then. Epic is bringing their client to Linux (supposedly), but it's unknown when.
As a second option, have you considered dual booting, with Linux as the default? Then you/he can still have the benefit of Linux most of the time with Windows as a backup for the problematic games.
They can make an Epic client without Fortnite. The problem is that anti-cheat on Linux is fundamentally incompatible with software freedom. Because anti cheat is intended to prevent you from controlling your computer.
To be clear, I believe you are talking about kernel-level anticheat?
I once read that kernel anticheat is the lazy option. Devs can supposedly combat cheating without that, but it takes effort (meaning $$$).
So Fortnite could come to Linux, but Epic would have to fundamentally change how they deal with cheating, and the CEO doesn't seem the type to give a shit about that.
And why should they? The bottom line is the bottom line. It doesn't make any business sense to spend money to change your anti cheat mechanism so you can capture a tiny group of users. The incentive just isn't there
I think it's shortsighted. The Linux gaming market is growing, and anyone with business foresight would be putting systems in place to capture that market. Apple is bound and determined not to be compatible with anyone, and Microsoft is not doing gamers any real favors lately, so it's likely to continue to grow even further as people look for alternative(s) to both.
Epic's anti cheat support Linux, the CEO refuses(-ed) to use it in their own games because they hate Linux.
Talking out of my ass, i think this shift is one of two things. The first would be their customers wanting to target Steam Deck having doubts of Epic's anti cheat capacity in Linux. If they don't support it in their own games (and Rocket League had Linux support before being bought out). The other is they want to launch their own Linux based console with their Store pre-installed. They've always wanted to have a store front, to the point they challenged Google and Apple for a bigger piece of the pie. Today, this last part is unlikely considering the price of components.
The issue with that setup is, if Fortnite is one of the primary things he does, he's just going to stay on windows and never use the linux install. Nothing is more annoying than having to constantly reboot into a new OS since it requires closing everything out. It would likely end up being a Windows default and occasionally swapping to linux (more realistically just never swapping to linux)
That flow is what I do though, I have both Debian and Windows 10 installed and default to Linux, but thats also because I don't play a game that hard requires windows to function, so my usage of the OS is strictly hardware/firmware updates and the once or twice a year that I do have a game that straight doesn't work on linux at all.
If normal win11 gives you problems you can still use win10 21h2 iot ltsc till 2032 with security updates and win11 iot ltsc to avoid a big part of the mess.
Tech your kids that how other os do stuff, and who knows he might find it interesting.
You can still debloat it and put it on its own vlan. Gotta make sacrifices sometimes.
good idea, vland 👌🏻
There's a launcher for Linux that allows you to run the Android version of Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Is there a similar thing for Fortnite?
There is also a "free" version of minecraft for raspberry pi which presumably can be ported
The point of it is being able to play online with friends running the official version of the game on mobile or consoles. That means you need Bedrock Edition. If you don't care about multiplayer or your friends all play on computer, then you should probably use Java Edition, which is natively available on Linux anyway.
Also, Pi Edition is thirteen years old and was massively hobbled from the main production version back when it was new, so if you want a free Minecraft experience, you're better off using Luanti.
unsure how powerful your pc is. but i've heard you can achieve great performance on a vm using qemu. another option would be dual booting.
thanks for suggestion, but think that get me banned because anticheat detects it.😢
