Nice looking cedar! If that first step is higher than the others could add some gravel to make same so people don't get that awkward step/trip when steps are not the same height, but maybe only 3 don't get into that expectation? You'll be used to it and bound up them like parkour. :)

Those are some damn fine stairs, especially for a first timer.
A customer wanted me to rebuild a similar set of stairs for her deck that had started to rot out. When I was done she then concluded that now the rest of her deck looks bad so I rebuilt that as well. After that she then figured that I might as well re-do the front porch and the two smaller steps from the side of the house too while I'm at it. 4 hours of work turned into a 1 and half weeks.
You did great for a first-timer! I made two sets of very similar stairs and I was very proud of them when I was done. They're quite difficult to do but when you finally get in there, like you said, it clicks. Hardest part was getting the stringers right, second hardest part for me was the landing, since I poured concrete and as you can see, I got it wrong by about 6 inches, lol.

Super cool. I've got a set of stairs I need to rebuild now. Not sure why but I worry I'll mess them up.

I watched a few videos on how it’s done. Just measure a bunch. My circular saw worked really well for cutting the stringers.

Looks: sink that single nail or screw. Then fill it in and paint over it, nobody will ever see how this shit was put together between now and when a fat fuck accidentally leans on the rail and lands 10ft down the hill.
Functionality: these 3/8 screws backed up with nuts will keep the structural integrity of this deck even is a fat... That fat fuck leans on it every day of the year for 30 years. Yeah it'll look odd for like 5 minutes until no one cares because it's a god damn deck and not the beautiful face of an Angel.
The first step (from the ground to the top of the first step) looks taller than the last step (the top of the second step to the deck).

Yep the last step is gimpy. I think I was basically having trouble measuring from the deck to the ground. I should have taken that measurement after building and leveling the landing pad

I have never seen anyone put the cleat in the middle of the bottom step run.

It would be fewer cuts and fewer measurements if it was right out at the end. So quicker and easier. I’m used to using a depth gauge and combo square and I like to throw in a bit of “le fine woodworking” when I play carpenter 🤠
FYI, you fucked your stingers up, that notch made your throat whatever that cut depth is, and the square notch is a place for the stinger to split.
You put it at the front (ahead of minimum throat) or lay your stairs on it.

Affects throat depth and the square cut is a split point. If the front of the stinger by riser gets loaded, those stairs are done.

But if the whole weight of the bottom run is flat/supported it should not matter that much.
I see your point though, they shouldn't have done it.
I live where there is frost, it’s shifting no matter how well you did the base. It’s unlikely to be a problem, especially with how small it is. But it’s also fixable with screwing a board on the inside like a double stinger.
Even melting snow can refreeze and put pressure on the front, since that could be the only place melting.
