Okay, but how about Labor and the Coalition put a 90% tax on all the oil and gas exports from the country and put it into a sovereign welfare fund for all Australians. So there's no more dawdling and delays...

Sounds like a fair deal to me.

    The government talks about several matters simultaneously. Discussion of one topic neither prevents nor hinders existing focus on other points.

    Not all topics are born equal and this petty squabble pales in comparison to the incomprehensible devastation bearing down upon us due to climate collapse.

    I understand that this topic is not high on your agenda. That does not make it petty. As someone involved in volunteering my time to help run what the government describes as a social media site and as the parent of a teenager and tween, social media is in fact something that matters to me.

    I do not want to be one of those parents whose kid kills themself over shit they were exposed to on Social Media. I probably know more about the topic than most parents and am unlikely to face that scenario. But that's the thing - I don't want other parents to face that situation either, over something we can possibly do something about. If you've followed the topic as it's been covered on the site, you'll probably know my personal feelings on the present Social Media reforms.

    More than half Aussie kids have faced cyberbullying source. That number skyrockets if there's something "different" about them (eg. Trans kids are over 80%). Three aussie kids are attempting suicide per week over "petty" stuff they're exposed to online source.

    But you know what? I also care about climate change and our existing fossil fuel policies. I likely even agree with you on that topic. I'd be more than willing to engage on that topic in a discussion where it's relevant.

    But don't sit there and call something that doesn't affect you "petty".

    That would mean tearing up a past agreement with a major ally, all because we decided the elected prime minister who signed those agreements is an idiot.

    Getting past that issue, obviously a 90% gas tax is unreasonable. In no universe would that pass and even if it did it wouldn't raise any revenue. Not even the hack Richard Denniss is calling for that. He's calling for a 25% gas export tax.

    If, hypothetically we get that through, total gas export revenue in 2026 is forecast to be 100 billion dollars. That's twice as much as usual and completely ignores any expenses incurred developing Australia's gas fields (as opposed to Qatar's super accessible ones). The 2026 federal budget is 800 billion dollars. A 25% tax on revenue would raise just 25 billion dollars, just 3% of the federal budget in an exceptionally good year for gas exports.

    Labor doing it would be a massive legal, political, and diplomatic headache but sure, let's devote the next decade to this.

    There's a reason The Australia Institute is so aggressively pushing for this, especially now that Labor's in office. They're trying to distract you from the capital gains tax changes. The right's already shifted to the LNP and One Nation because they hate the capital gains tax changes, now they're trying to get the left to shift to the Teals because apparently the fact Labor's unwilling to waste a decade on raising revenue in one of the stupidest ways imaginable makes them corrupt and captured by the gas lobby.

    The wealthy in Australia hate that we have the Labor party. They'd rather we be like the Americans and have two parties: Woke LNP (Teals) and One Nation.

    The Greens are awaiting details of the exposure draft before deciding how to vote, while Senator Hanson-Young has proposed her own bill, calling for an algorithm opt-out to be the default setting.

    That measure has been the focus of a campaign by Teach Us Consent's Fix Our Feeds, which has been pushing for linear social media feeds to be the default option.

    It sucks that we're here, but it would actually be amazing precedent to have the concept of enthusiastic consent in the digital sphere enshrined into law, even in this small way.
