Stolen from this video where it was undoubtedly stolen from somewhere else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMQwrIaorfk

Also, a War Thunder youtuber I like made a cool cinematic of this air battle in her video on the MiG-25 that she made with the creator of the previous video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPzPpIFEsr8&t=1135s

I think the fact that Israel used a flight of F-35s to hit the last combat operational MiG-25 on the ground in I think Syria or Libya in either this or last decade says it all. They were terrified of it. People think it's a shit box because of propaganda where it was compared to the F-15 in dogfights. It would be like comparing the STOL capabilities of the X-15 to the AN-2.

Meanwhile her successor, the MiG-31, is still racking up wins lobbing hypersonics and long range air to air missiles into Ukraine with impunity.

Would've been more had Iraqi ground control giving him authority to fire earlier. they couldn't ID the Yankee planes and were worried about friendly fire since another Iraqi airforce jet had taken off shortly from a nearby airbase around the same time.

The MiG-25 was goated. Fast a fuck and sported a radar so powerful it wasn't allowed to be activated at low altitude because it would burn out nearby radar stations. One of the few planes that truly scared the NATO fascists during Desert Storm, able to penetrate AWACS airspace and escape with nothing but its high speed. if it had modern intercept missiles and ground control it would have been much more lethal.

While it's not in service in many places anymore, due to the heavy maintenance burden and fewer spare parts compared to the iconic MiG-21, the MiG-31 is the modern equivalent and a powerful interceptor and strike aircraft capable of carrying the Kh-47 Kinzhal ballistic missile.

I pretty much believe this is how all interceptor design should be. The concept of dogfighting is silly. The jets are mobile missile platforms to deliver a payload of missiles from airfield to target. The faster they get there and the faster they leave the less time there is for them to be shot. Manoevering is also entirely unnecessary if you can just outrun anything that wants to shoot at you.

Get to target, shoot at target before target shoots at you, leave.

It's another classic case of the USAF being extremely Hollywood/Vietnam brained.

Pretty much. I see 3 things that matter most: Speed of the interceptor. Detection of the interceptor. Range of the missile fired by the interceptor.

You want to get to target faster than the enemy can detect you, communicate that it has detected you among its command structure, get permission to fire at you. Bonus points if you can fire from outside the range that the enemy can fire, then you're just 100% safe.

The speed part is crucial. The slowest part of anything that happens in the military is the communications that have to occur in order to get permission to shoot at something. If you can do your thing faster than their communications cna happen then you win. This is why shutting down enemy communications has always been so powerful in every war. But you can also just do it with speed before they even have a firm grasp of what is happening.
