In Finland, nobody looks for cars before crossing the road, phone or no phone.
This should be the default setting everywhere.
This is also why Europe should ban self-driving cars which were trained on American roads and driving data.
"Could"?
Those people are a menace and a danger to others, if a car needs to make evasive maneuvers, it can result in even greater harm than just hitting the idiot jaywalker.
Fuck people who think they own the road, and don't think they have to pay attention, even when they enter bike-lanes or roads, or simply walk like they own the pavement, without regard for anyone or anything around them.
What a moronic claim, when a distracted pedestrian suddenly walks into the street completely unexpected, that is 100% his own fault, and he is putting not only himself at risk, but also others.
You have clearly not been driving a car and experiencing this.
In my city we have crosswalks where people can just hit a button and turn on a red light. It still doesn't stop people from wandering into traffic and into my bike lanes every day.
